Shoji Ueda (1913-2000) was one of Japan’s most prominent modernist photographers and continues to be one of the nation’s most highly regarded. Working mostly in his home prefecture of Tottori, he frequently incorporated surrealist imagery into his photographs. He often used his wife and three children as subjects, with the local landscape of sand dunes as a backdrop.

Benrido Atelier has collected six of Ueda’s most cherished images for inclusion in this finely printed collotype portfolio. These six pictures are seminal works from his explorations in unnerving our visual experiences, mixing the every day with the absurd. The collotype process elevates the tonal qualities of Ueda’s images beyond any previous iteration–the prints can only truly be appreciated in person.
