City Poetry 城市詩意 is Romain Jacquet-Lagrèze’s most personal project to date, a photographic exercise that shows the artist further deepening his roots in Hong Kong and Cantonese culture. Jacquet-Lagrèze set himself the task of documenting visually striking street signs which he took home where his wife would help to translate, slowly enabling him to decipher the characters that adorn this city’s streets. As his archive grew so did his knowledge, forming sentences with photographs of individual characters results in poems that are both visual and linguistic.
The exhibition will feature about 30 works including some pieces from his previous projects, Wild Concrete, Concrete Stories and Blue Moment. There will be an Artist Talk and other events surround the exhibition and his books will be available during the exhibition.

「城市詩意」是Romain Jacquet-Lagrèze 最新的個人企劃，今輯攝影系列印證了這位法籍攝影師對於香港及其語言文化的熱愛再度昇華。Jacquet-Lagrèze以攝影紀錄街上各種充滿視覺 魅力的招牌，帶回家中讓太太協助翻譯，漸漸地，他學會解讀滿佈大街小巷的文字密碼。他儲下了大批這樣的文字照片，中文知識亦隨之加深。他更運用這些文字照片拼砌成有「詩意」的句子，巧妙地集合「視覺」與「語文」於一身。
展覽將展出約30件作品，包括他之前的其他系列如《石林獨秀》、《天台故事》、《香港印象》以及《藍色時分》。 展覽期間將舉辦藝術家座談會以及其他相關活動，同時亦將提供藝術家所出版的攝影集。
City Poetry 城市詩意 est à ce jour le projet le plus personnel de Romain Jacquet-Lagrèze, un exercice photographique qui montre l’artiste approfondissant ses racines dans la culture Hong kongaise et cantonaise. Jacquet-Lagrèze s’est fixé la tâche de documenter des plaques de rue visuellement frappantes et de les ramener chez lui, où sa femme l’aide à les traduire, lui permettant de déchiffrer les signes qui ornent les rues de cette ville. À mesure que ses archives grandissaient, ses connaissances s’approfondissaient, formant des phrases avec des photographies de signes individuels, donnant naissance à des poèmes qui sont à la fois visuels et linguistiques.
Cette exposition mettra en vedette environ 30 œuvres, y compris certaines de ses derniers projets, Wild Concrete, Concrete Stories and Blue Moment. Une discussion avec l’artiste aura lieu et d’autres évènements concernant l’exposition, ses livres seront également disponibles durant l’exposition.
“Deciding to learn Cantonese I naturally wanted to find a way to engage with the language by using my camera. My wife who is Hong Kong-born would help me when I got back home from my photographing walks, review all the characters, explain their original meaning and offer suggestions for ways to give them a new poetic meaning. This is the first project where she is very involved which makes sense as I deepen my roots in Hong Kong and become more integrated in her culture.
當我決定學習廣東話時，我很自然地想尋找⼀個以相機與語⾔互動的方法。我太太是⼀位⼟⽣土長的香港人， 每次我拍攝完畢後回家，她都會幫忙檢查所有字體，解釋它們的原本意思，及提供建議去賦予它們新的詩意。 這個項目是她首次如此投入參與，讓我加深在香港的根基並更加融入她的⽂化。
”Décidant d’apprendre le cantonais, je voulais naturellement trouver un moyen de m’engager dans la langue en utilisant mon appareil photo. Ma femme, qui est née à Hong Kong, m’aide quand je rentre chez moi après mes marches photographiques, passe en revue tous les signes, explique leur sens original et propose des moyens de leur donner un nouveau sens poétique. C’est le premier projet où elle est très impliquée, ce qui a du sens, car j’approfondis mes racines à Hong Kong et m’intègre davantage dans sa culture.” ”
