This exhibition opens with an experimental take on street photography by Fan Ho, as well as Hong Kong’s iconic neon signs as captured by Keith Macgregor, black and white harbour shot in 1980 by Robin Moyer and the 80s busy day scenes by Greg Girard. More recent approaches include the midnight Kowloon side by KC Kwan, documentary post-war post-war modern architecture by Walter Koditek, 'City Poetry' series composed by Romain Jacquet-Lagrèze, a contemporary stylistic approach by young photographer Jason Au, and Michael Kistler’s seductive deep hue scenes of today’s Hong Kong.

Exhibition: Photography. My Passion. My Life.

Fan Ho’s new exhibition plus his latest publication “Photography. My Passion. My Life.”, bundling the best of his work, intertwining his internationally renowned works with those that have yet to be released. The book contains an essay “My Quest”, written by Fan Ho himself in the 70’s, explaining his own practice and his stylistic journey as he was influenced by different movements in photography occurring at that time. Through his essay, we learn about his interpretations of aesthetics, poetics, philosophy and synergy, as seen in his photographs.

As per the Fan Ho family, “Fan Ho will always have a special place in our hearts, and we feel closer to him through the lasting legacy of his work. We know we will continue to discover something refreshing every time we look at his unforgettable images, be they portrayals of a bygone era or of the endurance of the human spirit.”

Exhibition: HK UNSEEN | Greg Girard

The 1980s are widely considered Hong Kong's “Golden Age", the decade when the city came into its own, seemingly full of promise and infinite possibilities. A young Greg Girard, growing up in Vancouver, was deeply struck by a 1962 photograph of Hong Kong harbour, by Eliot Elisofon, and he made it his life's mission to get here and see it for himself. He first arrived by boat in 1974 and in 1982 decided to settle down in this bustling city. Drawn by Hong Kong’s dynamic blend of east and west, Girard spent the 1980s roaming its streets, capturing Hong Kong as he saw it, especially at night, raw and very much alive. This key period helped Girard define his path as a photographer and artist.

Exhibition: The Labyrinth 迷宮 | Christopher Button

‘The Labyrinth’, with a book soon to be published under the same title, is a series captured by rising photographer Christopher Button on his many late nights spent in the underground stations of Hong Kong, where he transforms some of the city’s most crowded locations into a quiet, dystopian world. Shooting with analogue in an age dominated by digital media, he presents a horror film reminiscent of Kubrick’s cinema that is perhaps relatable to those who also feel trapped during these times of uncertainty.

‘NUDE STUDIES 裸體研究’ explores the age-old fixation by artists to represent the human body specifically through the lens of three current photographers. All practice within the analog domain and yet their work manifests in unique forms. From the Grand Master of the minimal black & white aesthetic, Michael Kenna breaks new ground by photographing the human figure for the first time but not without his signature style. For colour and the vital female gaze we turn to Au Tze Long whose intimate and deeply personal works move between stories, dreams, ritual and reality, whispering of life’s inherent messiness and pain. Ben Felten’s project on photosynthesis marriages content and technique as his double exposures of plants on nudes come to life through cyanotype printing which are developed in sunlight.

Exhibition: Yasuhiro Ogawa 小川康博 | The Dreaming

Blue Lotus Gallery proudly presents Japanese photographer Yasuhiro Ogawa’s debut exhibition in Hong Kong: ‘The Dreaming’. The exhibition will feature a selection of about 20 handmade dark room prints.

‘The Dreaming’ is Ogawa’s latest photo-book (published February 2020) comprising a collection of black and white photographs, shot during his travels throughout Asia over the past 30 years. Ogawa visited China (including Tibet), Myanmar, India, Cambodia and other countries. As per publisher Mark Pearson: ‘Ogawa’s photographs succeed in a difficult task: capturing the world as otherworldly and fascinating as it can truly be.’

For the artist, revisiting his negatives felt like reliving an old dream.

But for many of us, these images will echo the feeling of care free travel: the sensation of freedom, andwaiting… simply feeling alive… something we, for now, can only just but dream about.

'Back to Nature' 回歸自然 a photographic journey through Mongolia with Marc Progin

Back to nature is a photographic journey through Mongolia, with Marc Progin, that bypasses the walls of societies and the cities to enlarge our horizon and reconnect with the 3 worlds that are the sky, the earth and nature. It is at the same time while travelling in open space, to enter your inner self; to discover the beauties of nature and awaken those who sleep in you. It is to find the human essence, from where we came from and to give a reason to our life, learn for what else we are on earth than to live.

Portrait of Hong Kong by Fan Ho | Exhibition @ Blue Lotus Gallery

Exhibition Dates: 22 March - 14 April 2019,

Venue: Blue Lotus Gallery, 28 Pound Lane, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong [New Address!]

This exhibition showcases the last body of work of prominent photographer Fan Ho as embodied in the book project ‘Portrait of Hong Kong’. For this final endeavour the celebrated and much-loved photographer and film director, Fan Ho, went through his extensive archive of negatives to compile a of series of work that had not previously been published. In 2015 Fan Ho selected about 500 old negatives from his own archive which he then cropped in his signature style. After the deeply unfortunate event of his passing, it took another year for the project to be completed with the help of his family and Sarah Greene. The flow of images takes you on a journey travelling from West to East of Hong Kong Island, starting with the boat people, moving through construction and modernisation, across the harbour to Kowloon side, ending in the New Territories and the quiet waters of Hong Kong.
