Blue Lotus Gallery is proud to present Michael Wolf’s: 'Tokyo Compression’. Despite Wolf being a firm fixture in the Hong Kong art scene, this important body of work has never been exhibited in Hong Kong before.

The same series is shortlisted by the prestigious PRIX PICTET, the global award in photography and sustainability, which this year has the theme of SPACE. ‘Tokyo Compression Final Cut’, the book’s 4th revised edition will be launched during the preview night and will available for sale throughout the exhibition. The book has been selected by Martin Parr as one of the most important photo-books of the last decade.

The exhibition will be held in the artist’s studio in Chai Wan giving visitors the opportunity to meet the artist in person while visiting the exhibition.

By concentrating on the details of each face and each subway window, Wolf enables the viewer to connect immediately with the emotion, regardless of whether the viewer has ever experienced such overcrowding. Wolf focuses exclusively on faces and figures, and creates with his radical aesthetics immensely intense images, which aim in a disturbing, even shocking way, directly into the inner life of the portraits.

“This is not a dignified way of living. It's like looking into a ride in hell.” quoted Michael Wolf for an interview with CNN in March 2016.

As per Francis Hodgson: “Wolf’s are brilliant photographs; it’s as simple as that.  They’re made and cropped and sequenced with skill and care and the deep conviction that meaning will out– of good photography as of good words.”

"Tokyo Compression Final Cut” as will be launched during the exhibition, is the fourth and final revised edition of the classic with many previously unpublished pictures and a completely new ending.
